Day Spa News: As Sun Safety Grows, So Do The Benefits of Sunless Tanning
The popularity of self-tanning products is surging, showing that Americans are wising up about sun safety. They're putting their money where their skin is.

UVB sunlight: a bad guy
UVA sunlight: a really bad guy
UVA and UVB rays both damage the skin they just do so in different
ways. UVB rays impact the surface of the skin while UVA rays penetrate
to deeper layers. Both burn, UVA rays only burn deeper.
Over 90% of ultraviolet radiation is UVA, which is most intense in early morning and afternoon, can pass through window glass, penetrates into the dermis, and causes tanning and wrinkling.
UVB is most pronounced midday, does not penetrate window glass, and is associated with sunburn.
Malignant melanoma, the most serious of all skin cancers, is increasing faster than any cancer except lung cancer, more than doubling in the last decade.
A sunscreen with SPF 15 filters 92% of the UVB.
Summer-weight clothing offers SPF of 6.5
